Warrigal Waterhole, also known as Painted Rock, is a unique and culturally significant site located just outside of Mount Isa. This picturesque waterhole has been home to the Kalkadoon people for over 40,000 years and features stunning Indigenous rock art.
Visitors can explore the area and take in the breathtaking views, while also learning about the rich history and heritage of the Kalkadoon people. At the right time of year, the creek will be flowing and the waterhole will be full, making it the perfect spot for a refreshing dip.
How to get to Warrigal Waterhole (Painted Rock)
To get to Warrigal Waterhole, it’s about a 20-minute drive out of Mount Isa along the Barkly Highway, then turn right onto Curry Road. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is required to access the site.
- Head east out of Mount Isa along the Barkly Highway for 8.2 km
- Turn right onto Curry Road and follow the track in an easterly direction for 3.7 km
