Details
Bexhill Quarry is a swimming lake famous for its brilliant bright blue-coloured water. The swimming hole is located in the town of Bexhill, 10 km northeast of Lismore, at the site of the old Bexhill Brick Works, which closed down in 2002. The quarry has since filled with water, and the colour of the swimming hole comes from copper sulfate, which has leached out of the surrounding clay soil. The other amazing thing about this lake is that the water is crystal clear; so clear, in fact, that you can basically see down to the bottom of the quarry!
The water was once highly acidic, with a pH level of 3.98 (the Australian guidelines recommend a pH between 6.5 and 8.5). Over the years, the water quality has improved, as runoff from rain has diluted some of the metals in the water and balanced the pH. Despite the questionable water quality of Bexhill Quarry, it’s hard to resist the temptation of this inviting aqua blue-coloured water on a hot day.
Please note: This swimming hole is on private property, and swimming here is at your own risk. We do not encourage anyone to swim here! The water is a stunning bright blue. But was also crystal clear, i could see the bottom as I walked in. it drops off shortly after you walk in- and apparently it’s very very deep. Don’t open your eyes or mouth when in the water. Beautiful, tranquil spot. Would definitely swim here again!
