Details
The Lightning Ridge bore baths are filled with ancient water from the Great Artesian Basin, estimated to be around two million years old. This water is brought to the surface through a natural artesian bore and remains at a constant temperature of 41.5 degrees Celsius. The baths are part of a larger conservation effort to preserve the Great Artesian Basin’s resources for future generations.
The open-air baths have been operating since 1962 and are available for free to the public 24/7, except for short cleaning periods on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 10am-12pm. They are a popular spot for both locals and visitors to unwind, socialise, and soak in the warm water, which is believed to have therapeutic properties that can help alleviate muscle pain. The water flows at a rate of 9 liters per second, and the surrounding area offers amenities such as toilets, showers and a picnic area.
